Motivated Seller
501 Broad Street

Built in 1898, this outstanding flamboyant Queen Anne style architecture was designed by nationally-known architect George Barber. It is notable for its unusual polygonal tower, brackets, wood shingles and sawn and turned decoration. This combination of elements enlivens the overall composition. The one and a half story frame dwelling with corner turret, shingled gables, essential elements intact, is clad in clapboards and shingles with its asymmetrical plan and whimsical tower, wings, and decoration. Hipped-roofed with numerous cross gable wings, the house has two interior masonry chimneys veneered with gauged stucco from the north and south slopes of the roof and two similar but smaller chimneys from the rear ell.

The front facade features a six-sided tower with a hexagonal domed roof. Its roof has a molded cornice, curved brackets and crown molding around the bottom of the frieze. Windows of varying widths are double hung with nine panes in the upper sash and one in the lower and with stick-style design surrounding the windows. The front porch has a shallow, hipped roof and the entrance has a shingled pediment with a curved metal finial which flairs out at its peak. The barge board is wide and ornamented with slightly curved ends. Original mantels, stair banister and newel posts remain. Turned spindle decoration remains over the door that leads from the hall to the rear of the house. The unpainted pine woodwork upstairs is beautifully molded and in good condition.

This Landmark property is located in the Broad Kenan Historic District and is being sold with covenants to protect the historic architectural elements of the house. Wilson, NC is a quaint southern town in a community with a population of about 50,000. Wilson’s location is ideal being about 40 minutes to Raleigh, an hour to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, two hours to the beach, five hours to the mountains, and half-way between New York and Miami on I-95.

The city of Bellevue is located midway between Toledo and Cleveland in north central Ohio. With a population of 8600, the area has a rich historic past. The first family migrated to the area from Genesee County New York in the fall of 1816. Area historic attractions include The Mad River and NKP Railroad Museum, Seneca Caverns, The Sorrowful Mother Shrine and Lyme Historic Village.

In 1896 this fine Victorian home was built just north of the thriving downtown district of Bellevue. The many features of the property include pocket doors, beautiful oak woodwork and built-ins, antique light fixtures, five fireplaces, leaded-glass windows and a second floor laundry room. There is an enclosed sleeping porch and a separate computer room on the second floor. The home has storage galore and a walk-up attic. In addition to the main house there is a two bedroom apartment above the two car detached garage.

Have the majestic home that you have always dreamed of at a price that you can afford. Located in America’s most livable city, Pittsburgh, PA, this remarkable Edwardian style, six bedroom home exudes architectural and historic integrity. Easily accessible via the Parkway and two blocks from the East Busway, this home provides an ideal location just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh.

The neighborhood, centered around the stone, Gothic-style Singer Mansion – individually listed on the National Register – includes a remarkable variety of high quality design (including 21 homes designed by Pittsburgh’s own Art Nouveau influenced architect, Schiebler). This up and coming neighborhood is poised for revitalization and has recently been designated a Transit Revitalization Investment District. The home is four blocks from a vibrant neighborhood commercial district with grocery store, restaurants, shopping and services. Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation is undertaking multiple renovation initiatives within the community. Located on a hill overlooking the street, the house has the feel of being in a tree house. The lot has 6500 square feet.

The house is solid brick construction over a stone foundation. Original windows, including ten stained glass windows and rounded glass bay window flood the interior with natural light. The plaster walls are complimented by ample woodwork including an elaborate turned balustrade three floor open staircase, built-ins, fretwork, seven mantles, doors and trim.

Click here to see additional photos.

The kitchen has been sensitively restored, keeping elements of the original cabinets and reworking them to create a logical workspace. Stainless steel dishwasher, refrigerator with ice maker, and convection range are included as are a front loader washer and dryer. One and a half baths include mosaic tile floors and pedestal sinks. Within the past three years, a complete new efficient hot air heating system, new plumbing, electrical entrance and 200 AMP breaker box have been installed. The roof is about 10 years old and has been recently inspected.

The house is completely livable but limited interior cosmetic work along with improvements to the porches and eaves are needed and the price is reflective of that.

Please call to make this wonderful home yours.

Norwood House

The Norwood House is a beautiful spacious home with many unique details on a deep lot. Located on a historically important street in Downtown Goldsboro, this wonderful Queen Anne features stained glass windows, a central turret, and a partially restored attic. Zoned residential/commercial, the expansive home offers plenty of square footage for a live/work space. While restoration was begun on the house, it still needs updated HVAC, electric, plumbing, and new kitchen and baths.

The large lot also has a fully restored cottage. The cozy cottage was updated by the current owners with new wiring, plumbing, and tile in the kitchen, among several other changes. At 480 square feet, the quaint cottage has one bedroom, one bath, living room, kitchen, and small dining area. It can be occupied comfortably during the restoration of the Norwood House.

The property also includes a large 2-story, 2-car garage. The open floor plan of the second floor could easily be configured to include an apartment or “man den” or studio space.

The lively town of Goldsboro (pop. 39,000), the seat of Wayne County, is the home of the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. It is located in eastern North Carolina, 20 minutes from I-40 and I-95, one hour from Raleigh, and within easy access of North Carolina beaches.

Preservation NC has partnered with the City of Goldsboro, the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation, and Self-Help Credit Union to revitalize several neighborhoods in downtown Goldsboro. The neighborhoods will be transformed into a blend of residential historic structures and new homes that will include historic architectural details.

Homes range in size from 1,100 to 6,400 square feet and consist of a variety of architectural styles including Queen Anne, Victorian, and Italianate. The unique historic district includes residential and commercial structures.

T.C. Steele Boyhood Home, circa 1850
110 South Cross Street

This circa 1850 cottage was home to American Impressionist T.C. Steele during his formative years as an artist. Steele received his first formal arts training at the Waveland Academy where he began to teach at the age of 13. He moved from Waveland at the age of 19 already an accomplished portrait artist. He would later establish himself as one of the preeminent Hoosier artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana acquired the home to prevent its demolition.

The 1,200 square-foot, 1 1/2-story house displays simple Greek Revival details, with two Eastlake style porches and an arched window added later. Historic Landmarks has partially restored the exterior with a new roof, and siding, porch and foundation repairs. The exterior has been primed and painted. The interior requires complete rehabilitation including systems. Previous owners removed the home’s plaster walls and stripped the interior to studs; the buyer is free to restore the original floor plan or opt for an airy new configuration.

The home is located one block south of Waveland’s downtown historic commercial district. With a population of approximately 425, Waveland is located just minutes from Turkey Run State Park and Shades State Park, 15 miles from Crawfordsville, 40 miles from Terre Haute and approximately 50 miles from Indianapolis.

The home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is eligible for restoration tax credits. The property will be sold with preservation easements, so all exterior work will need to be reviewed and approved by Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana.

Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership-supported organization. Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana saves and protects buildings and places of architectural and historical significance; leads and assists individuals, organizations, and communities in preserving, adapting and revitalizing Indiana’s endangered landmarks; educates the public, restores buildings, advocates preservation, and provides financial support for preservation efforts; and seeks to enrich contemporary life and leave a legacy of landmarks.

On the docket for demolition
Posted:6/3/2010

We have less than 90 days to find a buyer willing to relocate an 1864 farmhouse in Jeffersonville. If we fail, the Clark County landmark will be lost forever.

The Thomas Benton Jacobs sits in a residential area along Utica Pike adjacent to the Ohio River, on land owned by Riverside Water Company. Though the company supports saving the house, time is running out as the utility moves to establish new wells on the Jacobs farm site. The water company is offering the home for $1 on the condition that it be moved.

Two lots close to the house are available for purchase, including a 1.2-acre tract immediately to the east listed for $89,900. Movers estimate it will cost $30,000 to relocate the structure to the closest lot.

The I-house style structure, a vernacular house type popular in the Midwest through the mid 1800s, has been vacant since 2006 and requires complete renovation – estimated at about $75,000. The home includes approximately 3,400 square feet in nine rooms, including two baths. Many original architectural features remain, including original clapboard siding with a decorative dentil molding cornice, and a side porch with original sawn-work railing and porch post supports, and several original windows. The interior features original woodwork, staircase, and hardwood floors.

Our deadline to find a buyer is August 24. For more information or to arrange a tour of the building, contact Greg Sekula, director of Indiana Landmarks’ Southern Regional Office, 812/284-4534 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 812/284-4534 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or gsekula@indianalandmarks.org.
